Cast Iron – Materials and norms

Cast Iron

Cast iron is a group of iron-carbon alloys with a carbon content greater than 2%. Carbon is excreted in the form of graphite or carbide. Iron alloys with lower carbon content are known as steel.

Compared to wrought iron, cast iron is characterized by high compressive strength, thermal conductivity, better pourability (the result of lower melting point) and slower progress of corrosion. However, due to its structure, cast iron tends to be brittle and exhibits poor formability.

The method of excluding graphite (its shape and size) from pig iron determines the properties of cast irons, and therefore its types: grey cast iron, ductile cast iron, white cast iron, malleable cast iron and vermicular cast iron.

Grey cast iron, i.e. cast iron with flake-like graphite structure, is the most common type. Its grade is derived from tensile strength. It has good lubricating properties, so it is suitable in production of low-stress plain bearings. It is used in engines, fittings, radiators, in the construction industry or for artistic castings.

Ductile cast iron, i.e. cast iron with spheroidal graphite, has higher carbon content than grey iron. Its key properties are greater ductility and flexibility. Ductile iron is widely used in the automotive industry.

We supply cast iron in the form of round, flat and square bars or bushings (hollow bars). We cut semi-finished products into precise pre-final dimensions using band saws.

Below you will find a selection of the most common material grades we work with. If you are interested in another grade or alloy, do not hesitate to contact us.

Please note the table of minimum machining allowances for removing surface defects for the supplied dimensions of round bars and flat bars of gray and ductile cast iron: link (opens in a new widow). Note for mechanical properties tables: values may vary depending on the manufacturing process and profile – more precise information for a specific semi-finished product is available on request.
